How to Write a Simple Proposal GUARANTEED to get You Development Support
Hi All,
Welcome to this weekās edition of the PMCW newsletter. I hope you have had a great week of growth and you continue to put extraordinary efforts into achieving the PM career that you desire.ššš
In todayās discussion I want to focus on how you can secure targeted support for developing your career. This may be in the form of training programs, workshops, certifications, or advanced education courses.
Alongside this I can not stress enough the importance of finding a mentor and sponsor, if you are serious in advancing your project management career.
I have summarized below a simple approach to creating a proposal for requesting development support. And created a free template that you can complete in under 30 minutes that will clearly outline your drivers and business case for support. And by the way, this really works - I used a similar template to write my application for MBA funding and was thrilled to graduate earlier this year after receiving a bursary from Warwick Business school and study support from my employer - I challenge you to complete the template now and get the support you need to drive your career forward.

7-Step Guide to Writing A Development Proposal
1. Introduction:
Begin by introducing yourself and stating your desire for project management career development. You may want to highlight the importance of project management in today's competitive business landscape and the need for continuous growth in this field. Relating this to the context of your own organization and division will add weight to your proposal. Be sure to emphasize your commitment to advancing your project management skills and knowledge.
2. Background and Current Situation:
Provide a brief overview of your current experience and achievements in project management. Explain any specific challenges or limitations you have encountered and how they have influenced your career progression. Share your commitment to overcome these challenges through targeted career development support. Demonstrate that you have a growth mindset and are willing to expand your understanding of the profession through skills, knowledge and experience acquisition. You may wish to relate to your most recent performance assessment and any areas that were specifically highlighted for development or growth.
3. Goals and Objectives:
Clearly define your career goals and objectives in the field of project management. Describe the specific areas of expertise, skills, or knowledge you aim to acquire or improve upon. Align your goals with the core competencies and requirements of project management, such as leadership, risk management, or stakeholder communication. Be specific in how this will increase the likelihood of successful delivery of your projects. And be clear in how this will be of wider benefit to your team, division and organization. Outline where in your career you are currently and how development at this stage will impact your progression to roles you aspire to in the future.
4. Proposed Career Development Plan and Justification:
Present a detailed plan outlining the specific activities and resources you need to enhance your project management performance. This may include elements such as training programs, workshops, certifications, or advanced education courses. Explain why the proposed career development support is essential for your professional growth. Emphasize how it aligns with your current role, contributes to your organization's success, or benefits the industry as a whole. Use data, research, or specific examples to substantiate your claims and demonstrate the value of investing in your career development.
5. The Role of Mentors and Sponsors
Highlight the importance and benefits of finding a mentor and sponsor to support your professional growth. You can discuss how mentors and sponsors can provide essential guidance, share their expertise, and offer valuable insights into navigating the complexities of the field.
Mentor - Emphasize the benefits of having a mentor, in providing career advice, outlining networking opportunities, and recommending new project experiences.
Your mentor can be someone who is internal or external to your current organization. The choice of mentor is often dependent on the type of relationship that you wish to build, and how best you feel you can relate to them and their own career journey. Remember you are seeking to leverage their experience so that in your own journey you can benefit from both their successes and failures. For this to be of real value both the mentor and mentee need to be fully open and honest and be willing to be vulnerable.
Sponsor - In relation to finding the right sponsors to support your career advancement. Discuss how sponsors can advocate for your career growth, open doors to new opportunities, and provide valuable professional connections. Increasing your visibility within the market, opening up access to challenging projects, and career advancement prospects.
Remember that strong sponsorship often leads to building strong relationships with influential stakeholders, which may be helpful to your career both now and in the future. Your sponsor will typically be in a position of some power. And have the facility to open doors and advocate on your behalf. A sponsor is not there to coach or mentor you. They are there to leverage their power on your behalf, in order to advance your progression and development ensuring that you have the right resources and opportunities to do so.
Be clear to set out how you will find a mentor and sponsor, who for instance you are considering and if any support or help is needed in securing them. Presenting the specific strategies you plan to employ to find a sponsor or mentor within your organization or industry will demonstrate your proactiveness and commitment to your proposal.
6. Budget and Resources:
Within this section outline the financial resources required to pursue your career development plan. Estimate costs for training programs, certifications, membership fees for professional associations, or any other relevant expenses. Additionally, mention any available resources within your organization or industry, such as internal training programs or mentorship initiatives. If you intend to self-finance part of the costs, make this clear. Seeking match-funding rather than the total cost can often bear fruit when budgets are stretched.
7. Evaluation and Measurement:
Outline how you intend to evaluate the effectiveness of the career development support you receive, including reiterating the impact of mentorship and sponsorship. Define specific metrics, such as increased project responsibilities or successful completion of certifications, to measure your progress. Utilizing the SMART (acronym - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timed) is an efficient framework to support evaluation and measurement of outputs. Discuss how you will track and document the impact of any investment both on your career and the organization. Putting this in financial terms such as a āmultiple returnā on investment can often provide a powerful support for your case.
